Getting to know Brett Starke in 10 questions:
1. What made you decide to get into real estate?
When I was in grade 5 we had to do a school project on the life we wanted to live. By this time I was already living in my 5th different city, and I thought it was totally normal for kids to change schools and homes every few years. For my project, I chose to live in a fancy hotel in a big city (now I live in the L Tower), that I wanted to marry Shania Twain (still single), and wanted to become a real estate agent so I could wear suits. Chris Coveny, a broker out of Ottawa, took me out one afternoon to shadow him and within a few hours I was hooked. I finished my real estate courses shortly after.
2. Where would we find you on a Friday night in Toronto?
You’ll find me on King St. or Queen St. stirring up trouble… Or at least attempting to.
3. Most embarrassing real-estate moment:
Very first day with my license I was told to, “preview all the vacant homes so you can build your market knowledge.” So, I did exactly that, except for the fact that one of the places was NOT vacant and the owner didn’t quite understand why I was walking into her unit unannounced! That was a tough one to explain to my manager on my first day. I’ve had better sleeps then I had that night…
4. Who stands out to you / do you most admire in the business world right now?
Tim Ferriss, Robert Kiyosaki, Elon Musk, Zuckerberg, Fredrik Eklund, Paul Vallee, Matt Whitteker, Tariq Zaid, Rob Imbeault, Jon Hughes, Abbis Mahmoud, Roger Greenberg.
5. What is the career philosophy / mantra / inspirational quote that gets you through tougher days?
Adapt & Overcome.
6. What is your theme song?
Lately, I’ve been listening to the Social Network soundtrack while I work.
7. Describe your dream home in three words.
OMG, view, windows.
8. Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years I see myself in peak physical and mental condition, leading a team of like minded young professionals and giving them the best workspace and environment to work within that can possibly exist. I want to create an environment where people are lifted up to work at their full potential, make money, and live the life they’ve always dreamt of. In five years I’ll be even more involved in the community through charity work. Right now I’m a member of the Dream Mountains Foundation, and additionally I am a volunteer teacher with Junior Achievement Central Ontario.
9. When you’re not wheeling + dealing real estate, what can we find you doing?
You can find me at Equinox either working out, texting, or procrastinating… Or attempting (sometimes even successfully) various yoga maneuvers. You’ll find me at restaurants with my friends and on trips – especially climbing mountains. I’m going back to Everest Base Camp in 2018; in 2015, we were evacuated after the earthquake devastated Kathmandu and Nepal.
10. Highlight of 2017 so far:
My highlight of 2017 thus far has been joining PSR. I know it sounds cheesy, but I find the people and the space, the support staff, and the management team to be very supportive. It’s a really inspiring environment, if you’re thinking about getting into the real estate business or changing brokerages shoot me a message or give me a call, I’d love to chat with you!
